Skin tags are nothing but small growths that erupt on the skin. There is not much difference between the color of the skin and that of the tag. Sometimes they are comparatively darker. Medically they are known as acrochordon. A small structure that resembles a stalk, mounts them onto the skin.
Plenty of factors are responsible for causing tags. Excessive weight is the most typical one. The numerous folds present on the skin of overweight people make them prone to getting tags. These folds often rub against each other, thus developing tags in that region. Some of the places where they generally appear are the neck, the armpits and the groin areas.
Selecting the most suitable skin tag treatment is very crucial. This is because when it comes to the removal of the tags, there are a lot of questions that arise in the minds of the people having them. Individuals are often worried that the removal of tags might trigger the development of more tags. This actually does not hold true. A very few individuals are vulnerable to getting them in a particular span of time.
The tags do not affect the people who have them in any way. They do not even impose any medical problem. Having said that, they are often considered to be a cosmetic problem. Their presence on visible parts of the body can be unsightly. Its presence may also affect the confidence of the person. Majority of the medical companies do not cover the expense of getting a mole removed, simply because it is not a medical problem. The person who wishes to get them removed thus has to bear all the expenses.
The surgical removal of the tag is thus a lot more expensive. This is the reason why removing them at home is usually preferred.
Even though they are not at all detrimental, they have very rarely been found to be cancerous. In cases like these, it becomes necessary to remove them. The tag might probably be malignant, if it grows unusually large or starts bleeding all of a sudden. One must visit a doctor immediately if things like these happen. Getting rid of such tags by oneself is not at all recommended.
Skin tags are certainly not contagious as opposed to warts. Their occurrence is also not due to any type of virus. There are also no chances of them passing from one person to another. The tags may even get removed on their own. The tag being twisted at the base, results in this as the blood flow to the tag gets restricted. Getting rid of the tag in this way is the best as there is no pain associated with it.
It is absolutely fine if the tags are not removed, as it is of no harm at all. Having said that, one should keep a check on them to detect any kind of abnormality if present. Having a doctors recommendation before removing a tag is always considered to be good. The procedure of removal can then be decided on the advice obtained from the doctor.
