A scientific journey that began in the early 1950s inside a University of Wisconsin botany laboratory has produced the anti-aging treatment used most often today by physicians in North America.
The university researchers were trying to find the cellular mechanism that promotes new growth in plants, using tobacco stems for their test tissues. After traveling a twisting scientific trail and overcoming rivalries with researchers at other schools, they made a breakthrough by extracting an active factor from herring sperm DNA. The Madison team then was able to isolate and synthesize the first highly active cytokinin plant hormone, scientific name 6-furfurylaminopurine. They named the compound kinetin and published their findings in the May 5, 1955 issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
The discovery attracted much media attention, including speculation that kinetin’s ability to control cell proliferation could lead to strategies to fight cancer. Since then, it has been found in the DNA of almost all biological organisms, from human cells to plants.
Today kinetin is manufactured and marketed around the world under licenses from patent-holder Senetek PLC of Napa, California. The leading producer of cosmetics that use kinetin as the key active ingredient is Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. Valeant has created, tested and marketed kinetin creams, moisturizers and lotions under the trademark Kinerase(R).
Kinetin’s role in nature of preventing the withering of plant leaves produces similar results in human skin. Some 90% of all skin changes are the result of prolonged and unprotected exposure to sunlight, which allows UV rays to break down the collagen and elastin fibers within skin cells. As a result, the skin becomes dry, begins to sag, and wrinkles and fine lines start appearing.
Clinical studies show that kinetin improves the skin barrier function and helps the skin to retain moisture, which promotes the natural renewal process and improves the skin’s texture, making it smoother and more even in color with a significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
People using products with kinetin typically notice a difference in skin softness and moisture retention as soon as 2 weeks after beginning continuous use. To combat reduced moisture retention in aging skin, Kinerase is scientifically proven to enable the skin to retain 15% more moisture after 12 weeks, and 25% more moisture after 24 weeks.
Recognition of kinetin’s restorative powers comes from many directions. The reknowned beauty editors of Allure magazine recently named Kinerase Cream the recipient of their prestigious Editor’s Choice Award for “Best of Beauty” anti-aging products. And celebrity users of Kinerase include Courteney Cox, Kate Beckinsale and Miley Cyrus.
